The E308L-17 Stainless Steel Electrode is a high-performance consumable engineered for the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) of austenitic stainless steels. Specifically formulated to join Types 304, 304L, 308, and 308L, this electrode offers a nominal weld metal composition of 19% Chromium and 9% Nickel. The controlled low carbon content (0.04% max) effectively prevents intergranular corrosion and sensitizing, making it suitable for applications where the weld zone is subject to corrosive media.
Unlike standard -16 coated electrodes, the -17 coating designation signifies a modification with silica, which enhances the wetting action of the weld puddle. This results in a concave, flat bead profile with fine ripples, reducing the need for post-weld grinding and finishing. The arc transfer is spray-type, characterized by stability and very low spatter generation. Slag detachability is excellent, often self-releasing upon cooling, which improves productivity and reduces downtime associated with chipping and cleaning.
This 3/32" (2.4mm) diameter electrode is designed for all-position welding. While optimized for flat and horizontal fillets, the fast-freezing slag also supports vertical-up and overhead welding with proper technique. It operates efficiently on both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), providing versatility for various power sources. Common applications include dairy and food processing equipment, chemical and petrochemical vessels, distillery apparatus, and general stainless steel maintenance and repair.
