OVERVIEW

Grind Aluminum Without the Clog

Every welder knows the frustration of taking a grinder to aluminum. You put a fresh disc on, make two passes, and suddenly the disc is black, gummed up, and useless. It stops cutting and starts smearing, generating heat that can warp your piece. The Pferd 62367 POLIFAN Flap Disc is the solution to that headache. It is built specifically to resist loading, meaning it spits out the aluminum chips instead of holding onto them. This keeps the abrasive sharp and cutting aggressively, long after a standard disc would have hit the trash bin.

Why Choose 80 Grit?
This 80-grit version is your go-to for finishing and blending. If you have already knocked down the heavy bead with a coarser disc, or if you are working on thinner gauge aluminum where you need finesse, this is the tool. It leaves a smooth, consistent scratch pattern that looks professional and is easy to prep for paint or clear coat. The Type 27 flat shape gives you plenty of surface contact, making it easier to flatten out welds without digging gouges into the base metal.

Cool Cutting Action
Heat is the enemy when finishing aluminum. If the metal gets too hot, it gets soft and gummy, making the grinding process even worse. This Pferd disc runs cool, helping you maintain the temper of the metal and avoid those ugly heat tints. Whether you are building custom tanks, repairing boat hulls, or fabricating architectural aluminum, having a stack of these 5-inch discs in your shop ensures you spend more time working and less time changing out clogged abrasives.

FAQ

This disc contains special fillers and coatings designed specifically for soft metals like aluminum. These additives prevent the metal shavings from sticking to (loading) the abrasive grains, which is the primary cause of failure in standard discs when used on aluminum.

Type 27 discs have a flat profile, making them ideal for blending and finishing on flat surfaces at lower grinding angles (0-15 degrees). Type 29 discs are conical/angled, which provides more aggression for stock removal and contour work.

While it physically can grind steel, it is not recommended. The abrasive is optimized for soft metals and may wear prematurely on hard steel. Additionally, using the same disc on both steel and aluminum can cause cross-contamination, leading to corrosion issues on the aluminum (galvanic corrosion).

This disc is designed for 5-inch angle grinders with a standard 7/8-inch arbor (unthreaded).

80 grit is considered a medium-fine grit. It is better suited for blending, smoothing, and finishing. For heavy stock removal or grinding down large welds quickly, a coarser grit like 40 or 60 would be more efficient.

No, flap discs have an integrated backing plate (usually fiberglass or plastic) and do not require a separate backing pad like fiber discs do.

Loading occurs when the soft aluminum melts slightly from friction and adheres to the abrasive grains. This covers the sharp edges of the grit, causing the disc to stop cutting and start rubbing, which generates excessive heat.
