The TurboTorch 0386-0112 S-3 is a specialized combustion tip designed for the Sof-Flame™ air-acetylene process. This unit is engineered to provide a laminar-like flow flame structure, distinct from the turbulent swirl combustion found in the Extreme™ series. The S-3 is optimized for low-velocity heating, making it the preferred choice for soft soldering operations where capillary action requires gradual and even heating of the base metal without the risk of blowing out the flux or overheating the joint.

Mechanically, the S-3 tip features a threaded connection compatible exclusively with WA-400 series torch handles. The internal geometry of the tip is designed to mix atmospheric air with acetylene gas at a ratio that produces a clean, soot-free flame at lower pressures. The tip is rated for a soft solder capacity of 3/8" to 1/2" (approximately 10mm to 13mm), making it suitable for Type M, L, and K copper tubing within this diameter range. The thermal output is calibrated to ensure the filler metal melts and flows within the wetting temperature range of common tin-lead and lead-free solders.

Component Architecture

The assembly is manufactured from solid brass stock, machined to tight tolerances to ensure gas-tight sealing and consistent flame propagation. A critical maintenance feature is the removable orifice (OR-T3 / 0386-1021). This component meters the gas flow and can be removed for cleaning or replacement, addressing common issues related to carbon buildup or debris ingress that can affect flame characteristics. The ability to service the orifice ensures that the tip maintains its specified BTU output and flame shape throughout its service life.

Operational Parameters

Operators utilizing the S-3 tip should ensure their regulator settings align with air-acetylene requirements. The tip relies on the venturi effect created within the handle and tip assembly to aspirate the necessary combustion air. Unlike oxygen-fuel systems, this single-gas setup simplifies the rig but requires the specific tip geometry provided by the S-3 to maintain a stable flame front. This tip is not recommended for brazing applications on larger diameters where higher heat flux densities (such as those provided by swirl tips) are required to reach silver solder liquidus temperatures efficiently.
