OVERVIEW

ESAB 1568 Series Gouging Nozzle - Size 19

Maximize your oxy-fuel efficiency with the ESAB 998274, a Size #19 gouging nozzle from the trusted 1568 Series. Engineered for compatibility with Oxweld C-32, C-66, and similar torches, this nozzle is optimized for Fuel Gas (FG) service, including Propane and Natural Gas. It provides a robust solution for operators who require controlled metal removal and groove preparation without the high cost or handling requirements of acetylene.

The geometry of the 1568 Series is specifically tailored for gouging. Unlike a standard cutting tip which focuses the oxygen stream to pierce and sever, this gouging nozzle expands the oxygen stream to wash metal away laterally. The Size #19 orifice delivers a substantial volume of oxygen, making it suitable for deep gouging passes on carbon steel. Whether you are back-gouging a root pass or removing temporary lifting lugs, this nozzle offers the control and power needed for precise work.

Technical Advantages

The nozzle utilizes a two-piece design standard for alternative fuel tips. The external copper sleeve resists heat adhesion and spatter, while the internal brass splines ensure proper gas mixing. Because propane and natural gas have lower flame propagation speeds than acetylene, the recessed tip end and internal splines act to anchor the flame, preventing blow-offs during aggressive gouging maneuvers.

FAQ

This nozzle is designed for alternative fuel gases such as Propane and Natural Gas. It is not suitable for Acetylene.

A cutting tip is designed to pierce and sever metal with a high-velocity stream. A gouging nozzle, like the 998274, uses a lower-velocity, higher-volume oxygen stream to wash molten metal away, creating a groove rather than a cut.

The ESAB 998274 is a two-piece nozzle, consisting of a brass inner part and a copper outer sleeve, which is standard for propane/natural gas efficiency.

The 1568 Series fits Oxweld-style torches, including the C-32, C-66, and C-77 hand and machine torches.

Since it is a two-piece design, you can separate the outer sleeve from the inner member to clean the splines and remove slag. Be careful not to damage the seating surfaces.

The size #19 refers to the orifice diameter or capacity of the nozzle. A #19 is a larger size intended for removing significant amounts of material in a single pass.

While it produces a flame, it is specifically designed for gouging (metal removal). For pure heating applications, a dedicated heating tip (rosebud) is more efficient.

Propane is generally much cheaper than Acetylene and is safer to handle. While the preheat time is slightly longer, the total heat output is sufficient for continuous gouging operations.
