OVERVIEW

Stop Birdnesting with the Right Liner for Aluminum

If you are struggling with aluminum MIG welding, the problem might not be your machine or your settings—it could be your liner. Using a standard steel coiled liner for aluminum is a recipe for frustration. The rough texture of steel liners shaves off micro-particles of soft aluminum, clogging the path and causing drag. This resistance leads to the dreaded "birdnest" at your drive rolls, ruining your wire and wasting your time. The Miller M1508 Teflon Liner is the solution you need to get back to welding smoothly.

Designed specifically for .047" (3/64") and 1/16" aluminum wires, this Teflon liner offers a slick, low-friction surface that allows the wire to glide effortlessly through the torch cable. Whether you are welding a boat hull, a truck box, or custom aluminum parts, consistent wire feeding is the key to a nice stack of dimes. This liner helps maintain a steady arc length and prevents the stuttering that leads to burn-backs and contact tip failure.

Why Choose a Teflon Liner?

  • Smooth Feeding: Eliminates the friction that causes soft wire to buckle.
  • Cleaner Welds: Prevents metal shavings from contaminating your weld pool.
  • Longer Consumable Life: Reduces wear on your drive rolls and contact tips by ensuring steady delivery.
  • Easy Installation: Fits standard Miller MIG guns; simply remove the old liner and slide this one in.

Don't let feeding problems slow you down. Upgrading to a proper Teflon liner is one of the most affordable and effective ways to improve your aluminum welding performance immediately. Make sure to trim the liner correctly and ensure your drive rolls are set to the proper tension for aluminum to get the best results.

FAQ

Aluminum wire is much softer than steel. A steel liner creates too much friction, causing the aluminum wire to buckle, shave, or birdnest. Teflon reduces friction significantly, allowing smooth feeding.

This liner is designed for wire diameters from .047" (3/64") up to .062" (1/16").

It is not recommended. Steel wire is abrasive and will quickly wear through the soft Teflon material, ruining the liner.

Use a sharp knife or a dedicated liner cutter to ensure a clean, flat cut. Do not use side cutters, as they can pinch the tube and restrict wire flow.

It fits many standard Miller MIG guns, but you should verify your specific gun model's manual to ensure it accepts the M1508 series liners.

Some Teflon liners require a brass neck liner or jumper for the hot front end of the gun. Check your gun's schematic to see if a separate neck liner is required.

If the liner is too long, it will be compressed when the gun is assembled, causing it to snake inside the cable. This creates friction and feeding issues. Always trim to the correct stick-out length.
