Every TIG welder knows that the devil is in the details. You can have the best machine and the steadiest hand, but if your torch consumables are worn out, your weld will suffer. The ESAB 53N85 Gas Lens Insulator is the specific gasket you need when running a gas lens setup on HW-90 style torches (and often 24-series micro torches). This 3-pack ensures you aren't left scrambling when you drop your torch or heat stress finally cracks your old insulator.
Why is this part so important? When you switch from a standard collet body to a gas lens, the geometry of the torch head changes. The 53N85 is shaped to accommodate the larger diameter of the gas lens screen assembly while sealing against the cup. It creates a barrier that stops the shielding gas from escaping out the back of the nozzle and prevents the electrified collet body from arcing to the nozzle (if using a conductive nozzle) or simply ensures the nozzle seats firmly. Without it, you get turbulence in your argon flow, which leads to gray, oxidized welds.
These insulators are made from durable, heat-resistant material meant to survive the harsh environment of the TIG arc. However, they do eventually become brittle from heat cycling. Having a fresh bag of three in your toolbox means you can swap out a questionable insulator immediately. It's a cheap insurance policy for expensive welds. Tighten your cup hand-tight to create the seal. Do not over-torque, as this can crack the insulator.
