OVERVIEW

Economy 2% Thoriated Tungsten for Steel & Stainless

Upgrade your TIG welding setup without breaking the bank with our Economy 2% Thoriated Tungsten Electrodes. Sized at 3/32" diameter, these are the workhorse electrodes for general fabrication, pipe welding, and maintenance repairs. Known in the industry as "Red Tungsten," they are the go-to standard for welders working on steel and stainless steel projects.

Why choose Thoriated? It's all about the arc. The 2% thorium formula ensures that your arc starts crisp every time and stays stable throughout the weld. Unlike pure tungsten, these electrodes resist spitting and melting even at higher amperages, giving you a clean, controlled puddle. They hold a point exceptionally well, meaning you spend less time at the grinder and more time under the hood laying beads.

This 10-pack of "Econo" grade electrodes delivers professional performance at a value price. Whether you are a seasoned pipe welder or a fabrication shop owner, these electrodes provide the consistency needed for high-quality X-ray quality welds. They are compatible with all standard TIG torches and collets designed for 3/32" tungsten.

FAQ

The color code for 2% Thoriated tungsten is Red.

It is not typically recommended. Thoriated tungsten is designed for DC welding. For AC welding of aluminum, Pure (Green), Zirconiated (White), or Lanthanated (Blue/Gold) tungsten is preferred as thoriated tends to split and does not ball well.

Yes, it contains thorium, which is slightly radioactive. While the risk is low during welding, you should use a dust extractor or wear a respirator when grinding the tip to avoid inhaling the dust.

Grind the tungsten longitudinally (lengthwise) to a sharp point. The taper length should be approximately 2.5 times the electrode diameter.

For DCEN welding, a 3/32" (2.4mm) thoriated electrode typically operates best between 150 and 250 amps, depending on the gas cup size and gas flow.

Econo refers to an economy line, offering a balance of performance and cost-effectiveness, suitable for general industrial use where premium ground finish tolerances may not be strictly required.

The AWS classification is EWTh-2.

Thoriated tungsten has a higher melting point and better electron emission, which provides easier starts and a more stable arc on DC compared to pure tungsten.
