OVERVIEW

ESAB 4043 Aluminum MIG Wire – .035" 1lb Spool

When it comes to welding aluminum, choosing the right filler metal is half the battle. The ESAB OK Autrod 4043 is a widely respected industry standard for general-purpose aluminum welding. This 1lb spool of .035" wire is specifically designed to fit spool guns and smaller MIG machines, providing professional-grade performance in a compact package. If you are welding 6061 tubing, repairing cast aluminum parts, or working on automotive components, this 4043 alloy is often the best choice due to its exceptional flow characteristics.

Unlike the harder 5356 alloy, 4043 is an aluminum-silicon mixture (AlSi5). This chemistry gives the molten puddle high fluidity, allowing it to wet out smoothly into the base metal. The result is a flatter, more aesthetically pleasing bead that requires less post-weld grinding or finishing. Because it flows so well, it is also easier to control for welders who may not weld aluminum every day. Furthermore, the lower melting point helps prevent burn-through on thinner materials, giving you a wider operating window for voltage and wire speed settings.

For those using a spool gun, the 1lb spool size is ideal. It keeps the weight of the gun manageable, reducing wrist fatigue during long welding sessions. ESAB ensures that their wire is clean and free of surface contaminants, which is crucial for aluminum welding where porosity can be a major headache. The wire is precision-wound to prevent tangles and ensure a steady arc. While 4043 may have slightly lower tensile strength than 5356, its resistance to hot cracking makes it the safer, more reliable option for the vast majority of general repair and fabrication tasks involving 6000-series aluminum.

Why Choose ESAB 4043?

  • Easy to Use: Excellent wetting action makes it easier to get a good-looking weld.
  • Crack Resistant: The go-to choice for 6061 and other heat-treatable alloys to prevent cracking during cooling.
  • Clean Finish: Leaves a bright, shiny bead that often looks great without painting.
  • Spool Gun Ready: The 4-inch, 1lb spool fits most standard spool guns perfectly.

FAQ

For MIG welding with 4043 wire, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas. For thicker sections, an Argon/Helium mixture can be used to increase heat input.

Aluminum wire is very soft and can bird-nest in standard MIG liners. It is highly recommended to use a spool gun or a push-pull gun. If using a standard gun, use a Teflon liner and keep the cable very straight.

4043 contains silicon, flows better, and is less crack-sensitive on 6061 aluminum. 5356 contains magnesium, is stronger, and feeds better but is more prone to cracking on certain heat-treatable alloys.

4043 wire will turn a dark gray color after anodizing. If color matching is critical for anodized parts, 5356 is usually a better choice.

It is suitable for welding base metals 3003, 3004, 5052, 6061, 6063, and cast alloys like 43, 355, 356, and 214.

MIG welding with aluminum wire is performed using DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive) polarity.

This is a standard 4-inch diameter spool with a standard arbor hole, which fits the vast majority of spool guns on the market.

The melting range is approximately 1065°F - 1170°F (574°C - 632°C).
