OVERVIEW

Welder's Perspective: Running Hobart Sterling AP

If you are looking for a stainless stick rod that runs like butter, the Hobart Sterling AP (All Position) 316/316L is the answer. We know that welding stainless out of position can be a nightmare with the wrong rod—fighting a fluid puddle that wants to drip or dealing with slag that just won't chip off. Hobart designed the Sterling AP series specifically to solve these headaches. The arc is incredibly smooth and soft, giving you excellent control over the puddle whether you are welding flat, horizontal, or even vertical-up.

One of the standout features for the operator is the slag release. On most passes, the slag will lift by itself as it cools, or curl up so it can be brushed away with zero effort. This is a huge time-saver during multi-pass welds and keeps your bead looking professional with that classic 'dime-stack' ripple pattern. The 3/16-inch size is a heavy hitter, perfect for filling larger joints on thick stainless plate or pipe without having to change rods constantly. It strikes easily on both AC and DC+, so it's compatible with almost any buzz box or industrial power source you have in the shop.

This rod isn't just about looks; it's built for the real work. The 316L chemistry means you are putting down a deposit that resists rust and corrosion better than standard 304 rods, especially in salty or acidic environments. Whether you are repairing a tank in a brewery, fixing a bracket on a boat, or fabricating heavy industrial piping, this rod gives you the confidence that the weld will hold up and look good doing it.

FAQ

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. 316L has a lower carbon content (0.04% max) compared to standard 316. This prevents carbide precipitation during welding, which maintains the corrosion resistance of the steel, specifically against intergranular corrosion.

Yes, the Hobart Sterling AP is designed to operate smoothly on both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP).

'AP' stands for All Position. This indicates the electrode's coating is formulated to support the weld puddle in vertical and overhead positions, not just flat and horizontal.

While it can physically weld 304, it is generally recommended to use 308L electrodes for 304 stainless. 316L contains molybdenum which is more expensive and unnecessary for 304, though it will not harm the joint in most non-critical applications.

For a 3/16" stainless electrode, the typical amperage range is between 100 and 150 amps, depending on the material thickness and welding position.

Stainless electrodes can absorb moisture. While they don't always require the high-temp holding of low-hydrogen carbon steel rods, it is best practice to store them in a rod oven at 250°F-300°F after opening the hermetically sealed can to prevent porosity.

This product typically meets AWS A5.4 requirements for classification E316L-17.

The '17' classification (titania-silica) coating creates a slag system that contracts more than the metal upon cooling, often causing it to lift or curl off the bead automatically.
