OVERVIEW

Reliable Stainless Welding for Professional Fabricators

When you are welding stainless steel, you need a wire that feeds smoothly and leaves a bead you can be proud of. This 10lb spool of ER308L .045" MIG wire is the workhorse you need for your shop. Designed for welding common 300-series stainless steels like 304 and 304L, this wire takes the headache out of stainless fabrication. We know that stainless can be finicky—issues like bird-nesting, burn-back, and ugly, ropy welds can ruin your day. That’s why this wire is manufactured with a consistent cast and helix, ensuring it glides through your liner and contact tip without binding.

The "L" in 308L stands for Low Carbon. Why does that matter to you? It means the weld won't rust out from the inside due to carbide precipitation. It's perfect for food service equipment, brewery tanks, automotive exhaust modifications, and architectural railings where appearance and durability are paramount. The .045" diameter is beefy enough for structural frames and thicker plate, giving you good deposition rates so you can finish the job faster. It wets out beautifully at the toes of the weld, meaning you spend less time with a grinder and flapper disc trying to make it look pretty.

For the best results, we recommend using a Teflon or plastic liner in your MIG gun to prevent iron contamination from steel liners. Pair this wire with a Tri-mix gas for the best looking short-circuit welds, or an Argon/Oxygen mix if you are spraying in the flat position. The 10lb spool size is a great middle-ground—lighter than the heavy 33lb industrial spools but lasting much longer than the tiny 2lb hobby spools. It fits standard 8-inch spool adapters found on most industrial wire feeders.

Why Choose This 308L Wire?

  • Clean Welds: Minimal spatter means less cleanup time.
  • Great Appearance: Produces shiny, bright welds that polish up well.
  • Versatile: Works on 304, 304L, 308, 321, and 347 stainless steels.
  • Consistent Feed: Precision winding prevents tangles and stoppages.

FAQ

For short-circuit transfer (common in thinner gauges or out-of-position welding), a Tri-Mix of 90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, and 2.5% CO2 is recommended. For spray transfer on thicker materials, use 98% Argon with 2% Oxygen (or CO2). Avoid 100% CO2 or 75/25 Argon/CO2 as the carbon pickup will ruin the stainless properties.

It is not recommended. While it might physically weld, ER308L does not contain Molybdenum, which gives 316 stainless its superior corrosion resistance. You should use ER316L wire for 316 base metals to maintain corrosion properties.

Yes, it is highly recommended to use a Teflon, plastic, or carbon fiber liner rather than a steel liner. Steel liners can abrade the wire and deposit iron particles, leading to rust streaks in your stainless weld.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. ER308L has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, whereas standard ER308 can have up to 0.08%. The lower carbon content prevents carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion, making 'L' grade superior for corrosion resistance.

This solid MIG wire requires Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), also known as Reverse Polarity.

This is typically an 8-inch diameter spool. It fits most industrial wire feeders and many portable MIG welders that accept 8-inch spools. Check your machine's manual for spool size compatibility.

U-groove drive rolls are preferred for stainless steel and aluminum to prevent flattening or shaving the wire, which can clog liners. However, V-groove rolls can be used if tension is set correctly and not overtightened.

No, ER308L is designed for stainless-to-stainless welding. For joining mild steel to stainless steel, you should use ER309L wire to prevent cracking due to dilution.
