OVERVIEW

Technical Specification: Murex ER316LSi .045"

The Murex ER316LSi .045" MIG Wire is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel welding wire designed for the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. This wire meets the AWS A5.9 classification for ER316LSi, featuring a nominal composition of 19% Chromium, 12% Nickel, and 2.5% Molybdenum, with a controlled carbon content of less than 0.03% and an elevated silicon content of 0.65-1.00%. The higher silicon level is the key differentiator, significantly improving the wetting action of the weld metal. This results in a concave bead profile with excellent tie-in at the toes, reducing the risk of cold lap and stress risers, while also improving the overall cosmetic appearance of the weld.

For the professional welder, the .045" (1.2mm) diameter is a versatile choice, capable of high deposition rates in the spray transfer mode when used with appropriate shielding gas mixtures, such as 98% Argon / 2% Oxygen or Argon / 2-5% CO2. It is also suitable for pulsed MIG applications, allowing for out-of-position welding on thicker sections. The 25lb (11.3kg) spool is designed for standard wire feeders and features a high-quality cast and helix, ensuring the wire feeds centrally through the contact tip for optimal electrical conductivity and arc stability. This reduces micro-arcing inside the tip and extends consumable life.

Metallurgically, the low carbon content prevents carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries, thereby preserving the intergranular corrosion resistance of the weld zone without the need for post-weld heat treatment. The molybdenum addition ensures superior resistance to corrosion from organic and inorganic acids. This wire is the preferred choice for welding base metals of similar composition (316, 316L) and can also be used for joining 304 type stainless steels where added corrosion protection is desired. It is widely utilized in the fabrication of pressure vessels, food processing machinery, and piping systems where sanitary and corrosion-resistant welds are mandatory.

FAQ

The 'Si' stands for Silicon. This wire has a higher silicon content than standard 316L, which improves the fluidity (wetting) of the weld puddle and results in a smoother, flatter bead appearance.

For MIG welding with 316LSi, a mixture of Argon with 2-5% CO2 or Argon with 1-2% Oxygen is typically recommended to ensure arc stability and proper fusion.

Yes, you can use 316LSi to weld 304 stainless steel. It provides excellent corrosion resistance, although 308L is the standard match for 304. Using 316LSi on 304 is often done when a shop wants to stock a single stainless wire for multiple grades.

The .045" diameter allows for higher deposition rates and higher amperage welding compared to thinner wires like .035". It is ideal for welding medium to thick sections of stainless steel plate.

Absolutely. The 316LSi grade contains Molybdenum, which specifically enhances resistance to pitting corrosion caused by chlorides found in saltwater environments.

This wire is designed to be used with DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive), also known as Reverse Polarity.

Generally, no. The 'L' (Low Carbon) designation means it resists carbide precipitation during welding, so it maintains its corrosion resistance without needing heat treatment after welding.

Yes, the 25lb spool is a standard size for industrial MIG machines and wire feeders. It typically requires a 2-inch spindle hub adapter if not already present on the machine.
