OVERVIEW

Smoother Stainless Welds with 308LSi

If you have ever struggled with stainless steel MIG wire that feels sluggish or piles up in a ropey bead, the Central Wire ER308LSi is the solution you need. This 2-pound spool of 0.030" wire is formulated with extra silicon, which might sound like just another spec, but in the shop, it makes a world of difference. That extra silicon helps the puddle flow out—or "wet out"—much better than standard 308L wire. This means your puddle moves where you want it to, tying into the edges smoothly without creating that tall, convex crown that requires hours of grinding later.

This wire is designed for welding the most common stainless grades, like 304 and 304L. Because it is a 0.030" diameter, it is versatile enough for thin sheet metal work on exhaust systems or kitchen equipment, but can still handle slightly thicker brackets and frames. The 2lb spool size is perfect for spool guns or smaller 110V/220V MIG machines that don't take the large 33lb industrial spools. It’s the perfect size for small shops, hobbyists, or mobile repair trucks where you need stainless capability without hauling heavy inventory.

When running this wire, you'll notice a stable arc and very little spatter if your settings are dialed in. For the best results on thin material, use a Tri-Mix gas (Helium/Argon/CO2), but for general work, an Argon/CO2 mix (like C2 or C25, though C2 is better for stainless corrosion resistance) can work in a pinch for short circuit welding. The low carbon content also gives you peace of mind that your welds won't rust out from the inside later. Upgrade your stainless game with a wire that actually wants to work with you.

FAQ

The 'Si' stands for high silicon. ER308LSi has higher silicon content than ER308L, which improves the fluidity of the weld puddle, resulting in flatter beads and better wetting at the edges.

For short-circuit transfer on thin gauge material, a Tri-Mix (90% He, 7.5% Ar, 2.5% CO2) is ideal. For spray transfer on thicker sections, use 98% Argon / 2% Oxygen or 97% Argon / 3% CO2.

No, it is not recommended. You should use ER316L or ER316LSi wire for 316 stainless to maintain the molybdenum content required for corrosion resistance.

This is a 2lb (approx 4-inch diameter) spool, which is the standard size for most MIG spool guns and smaller portable welders.

No, this is a solid MIG wire. It requires an external shielding gas to protect the weld pool.

Use DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive), also known as Reverse Polarity, for solid MIG wire.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion in the weld area.
