OVERVIEW

Smooth Running Stainless Rods for Professional Results

If you are looking for a stainless steel rod that runs like butter, the Selectarc E308L-16 is your answer. Designed for welding the most common stainless grades like 304 and 304L, this 2.5mm electrode takes the headache out of stick welding stainless. Whether you are repairing a commercial kitchen counter, fabricating a custom exhaust, or fixing a tank, these rods deliver a professional-looking bead with very little effort. The '16' coating designation means you get a smooth, soft arc that doesn't fight you, along with low spatter levels that keep your workpiece clean.

One of the biggest advantages of this Selectarc rod is the slag removal. In most cases, the slag lifts off by itself as it cools, or comes off with a light tap, revealing a shiny, gold-silver weld bead underneath. This saves you valuable time on grinding and cleanup. The rod strikes and restrikes easily, so you won't be sticking to the work every time you stop to reposition. It runs great on both AC and DC+, making it compatible with almost any stick welder, from industrial buzz boxes to modern inverter machines.

The 'L' in 308L stands for Low Carbon, which is a big deal for the durability of your project. It prevents the weld from rusting from the inside out (intergranular corrosion) over time. This 5kg pack gives you plenty of material to tackle larger jobs or keep your shop stocked for upcoming repairs. Trust Selectarc for consistent burn-off rates and high-quality deposits that make you look like a master welder.

FAQ

It is primarily designed for welding austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 301, 302, 304, and 304L. It can also be used for 308 and 321 grades stabilized with titanium or niobium.

The E308L-16 runs well on both Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP/DC+) and Alternating Current (AC). DC+ is generally preferred for smoother arc control.

If the electrodes have been stored properly in a dry environment, re-drying is often not necessary. However, if they have absorbed moisture, re-dry at 300°C-350°C for 2 hours to prevent porosity.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. This reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during welding, which prevents intergranular corrosion and ensures the weld remains rust-resistant.

No, E308L-16 electrodes are generally not suitable for vertical down welding due to the fluidity of the slag. Vertical up is the recommended technique for vertical joints.

Selectarc E308L-16 is known for excellent slag detachability. In many cases, the slag is self-releasing, leaving a clean bead that requires minimal brushing.

For a 2.5mm E308L-16 electrode, a current range of approximately 50 to 80 Amps is typically recommended, depending on the material thickness and welding position.

While it will physically weld mild steel to stainless (dissimilar welding), an E309L electrode is the correct choice for that application to prevent cracking. E308L is best for stainless-to-stainless.
