OVERVIEW

Exocor ER320LR: The Solution to Hot Cracking in Stainless

Welders know that not all stainless steel is created equal. When you are tasked with welding Alloy 20, standard stainless rods simply won't cut it. You need the Exocor ER320LR TIG Rod. This filler metal is specifically formulated to solve the "hot cracking" issues inherent in welding fully austenitic materials. The "LR" stands for Low Residuals—meaning Exocor has manufactured this wire with significantly reduced levels of silicon, carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus. These elements are the usual suspects behind micro-fissures in the weld bead. By keeping them low and boosting Manganese and Columbium, this rod delivers a solid, crack-free deposit every time.

Available in a 10lb tube, these 3/32" rods are perfect for root passes on pipe or general fabrication of plate material. The rod flows smoothly under a TIG torch, providing excellent wetting action and a clean bead profile that requires minimal post-weld grinding. Whether you are repairing a pump housing or fabricating a new acid tank, the ER320LR gives you the confidence that your welds will hold up against severe corrosion, particularly in sulfuric acid environments where standard 316L would fail rapidly.

Why Choose Exocor 320LR?

Exocor is a trusted name in specialty alloys. Their 320LR rods are manufactured to strict tolerances to ensure consistent chemistry from one tube to the next. This consistency is vital when working on code-critical jobs. The 3/32" diameter offers a versatile heat input range, allowing for control on thinner sections while still depositing enough metal for thicker joints. If you are working with Carpenter 20 or similar proprietary alloys, this is the matching filler metal you need to maintain the corrosion-resistant properties of the entire assembly.

FAQ

The 'LR' stands for Low Residuals. ER320LR has restricted levels of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur compared to standard ER320. This modification is crucial to prevent hot cracking (microfissuring) which standard 320 is prone to during welding.

It is primarily used for welding Alloy 20 (also known as Carpenter 20 or 20Cb-3) and other similar austenitic stainless steels designed for sulfuric acid resistance.

100% Argon is the standard shielding gas for TIG welding with ER320LR to ensure a clean, oxidation-free weld puddle.

While it might physically join them, it is not recommended. ER320LR is a highly specialized and expensive alloy designed for specific chemical resistance. Using it on standard 304/316 is unnecessary and may not provide the correct mechanical properties for those grades.

Like most stainless steel TIG welding, ER320LR should be welded using DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative).

Alloy 20 is fully austenitic. Without the 'Low Residual' chemistry of the ER320LR rod, the weld metal would be highly sensitive to thermal stress during cooling, leading to immediate cracking.

For 3/32" diameter stainless steel TIG rods, a 10lb tube typically contains approximately 120 to 130 rods, though this varies slightly by exact alloy density.
