OVERVIEW

Technical Performance: Avesta ER316L TIG Filler Metal

The Avesta ER316L is a molybdenum-alloyed austenitic stainless steel TIG rod designed for joining 316 and 316L base metals. The addition of 2-3% Molybdenum significantly enhances the weld metal's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in environments containing chlorides, such as marine atmospheres or acid solutions. This makes it the filler metal of choice for critical applications where standard 308L would be insufficient.

One of the primary technical advantages of this 1.6mm rod is its Low Carbon (L-grade) composition. With carbon content restricted to a maximum of 0.03%, the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries is minimized. This is crucial for maintaining intergranular corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition, eliminating the need for post-weld heat treatment in most applications. The rod produces a weld deposit with excellent ductility and toughness, capable of withstanding service temperatures ranging from cryogenic (-196°C) up to 350°C.

Welders will appreciate the superior operating characteristics of Avesta consumables. The rods are manufactured with a high-quality surface finish that promotes smooth feeding and stable electrical conductivity. The molten pool exhibits excellent fluidity and wetting properties, allowing for a flat bead profile with smooth tie-ins, reducing the need for extensive post-weld grinding or polishing. When used with 100% Argon shielding gas and DCEN polarity, the Avesta ER316L delivers a clean, spatter-free arc that allows for precise manipulation of the puddle.

Metallurgical Properties

  • Pitting Resistance: Enhanced by Mo content, offering superior longevity in harsh environments compared to 304/308 grades.
  • Ferrite Control: Balanced chemistry ensures a controlled ferrite number (FN) to prevent hot cracking while maintaining corrosion resistance.
  • Weldability: Optimized for GTAW (TIG) welding with excellent bead aesthetics and slag-free deposits.

FAQ

ER316L contains Molybdenum, which provides better corrosion resistance, especially against pitting in chloride environments (like salt water), whereas ER308L is standard for 304 stainless steel.

For TIG welding with ER316L, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas. It provides a stable arc and protects the molten pool from oxidation.

Yes, you can use ER316L to weld 304 stainless steel, but it is more expensive than the standard ER308L. It is technically acceptable but often considered 'over-alloying'.

DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as Straight Polarity, is used for TIG welding stainless steel.

The number of rods varies by diameter. For a 1.6mm diameter rod, a 4.54kg (10lb) tube typically contains approximately 250-300 rods.

Avesta products are typically fully traceable. Please request a Mill Test Report (MTR) at the time of order if required for your documentation.

Store in a cool, dry place. Keep the tube closed when not in use to prevent dust and shop contaminants from settling on the wire surface, which can cause weld defects.

Yes, 316L is the standard grade for food and pharmaceutical applications due to its high corrosion resistance and cleanability.
