OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: Avesta ER316L TIG Filler Metal

The Avesta ER316L is a molybdenum-alloyed, austenitic stainless steel TIG (GTAW) rod designed for welding 18% Cr / 12% Ni / 2.5% Mo type steels (AISI 316 and 316L). The addition of Molybdenum significantly enhances the weld metal's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments such as saltwater or acidic chemical solutions. This makes it the filler metal of choice for critical applications in the chemical, petrochemical, and pulp and paper industries.

Metallurgical Properties:
The "L" in ER316L stands for Low Carbon (typically <0.03%). This controlled carbon chemistry prevents carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during the welding thermal cycle, thereby mitigating the risk of intergranular corrosion (sensitization). Consequently, welds made with this rod generally do not require post-weld heat treatment (solution annealing) to restore corrosion resistance, which is a significant advantage in field fabrication.

Welding Characteristics:
Welders will appreciate the excellent wetting action and fluidity of the Avesta ER316L. It produces a smooth bead profile with minimal spatter and clean tie-ins. The 3.2mm (1/8") diameter is ideal for thicker base materials or multi-pass root and fill applications. It is designed for use with DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) polarity and 100% Argon shielding gas. While primarily designed for 316/316L base metals, it can also be used for welding stabilized grades like 316Ti (at service temperatures up to 400°C) and can serve as an over-alloyed filler for 304/304L stainless steels in specific corrosive applications.

FAQ

For TIG welding with ER316L rods, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas. It provides excellent arc stability and protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

This rod is designed for use with DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as straight polarity.

Yes, you can use ER316L to weld 304 stainless steel. It is slightly over-alloyed compared to 304 (containing Molybdenum), which provides excellent corrosion resistance, though ER308L is the standard match for 304.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. 316L has a lower carbon content than standard 316, which prevents intergranular corrosion (sensitization) in the heat-affected zone after welding.

The tube is sold by weight (4.54kg / 10 lbs). For 3.2mm diameter stainless steel rods, there are typically approximately 80-90 rods per 10lb tube, though this is an estimate based on density.

Yes, 316L stainless steel is widely considered the standard for 'food grade' applications due to its high resistance to corrosion from food acids and cleaning chemicals.

These rods have a diameter of 3.2mm, which is approximately 1/8 of an inch.

As an OEM Avesta product, material test reports (MTRs) are generally available upon request. Please contact our support team with your batch number if a certificate is required.
