OVERVIEW

Technical Specification: Harris ER309L Stainless TIG Alloy

The Harris ER309L is a premium quality solid TIG welding rod classified under AWS A5.9. It is engineered for Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) of heat-resistant base metals of similar compositions, as well as for joining stainless steels to carbon or low-alloy steels. The nominal composition of 24% chromium and 13% nickel provides superior oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength, making it suitable for service temperatures up to 300-350°C in dissimilar applications.

Metallurgical Properties & Performance

One of the primary technical benefits of the ER309L alloy is its resistance to hot cracking, a common issue when welding austenitic stainless steels to ferritic steels. The chemistry is balanced to provide a ferrite number (FN) that ensures a crack-resistant microstructure upon cooling. Furthermore, the extra-low carbon content (0.03% max) significantly reduces the susceptibility to intergranular corrosion (IGC) in the heat-affected zone, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing in many applications.

Operational Characteristics

This 1.6mm diameter rod offers excellent puddle control for precision root passes and out-of-position welding. It produces a smooth stable arc with 100% Argon shielding gas (DCEN polarity). The rod surface is cleaned to ensure smooth feeding and to prevent contamination of the weld pool. It is widely used in the petrochemical, power generation, and food processing industries for barrier layers and cladding operations. The 10lb packaging ensures ample supply for production runs while protecting the filler metal from atmospheric contaminants.

FAQ

ER309L is primarily used for welding dissimilar metals, such as joining 300-series stainless steel to mild or carbon steel. It is also used for the first layer of cladding on carbon steel.

For TIG welding with ER309L, use 100% Argon gas to ensure a stable arc and protect the weld pool from oxidation.

The 'L' stands for 'Low Carbon'. This indicates a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which helps prevent carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion.

Stainless steel TIG welding is typically performed using Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN).

While you can, ER308L is the standard choice for welding 304 to 304. ER309L is specifically formulated for dissimilar metals or higher alloy applications.

These rods have a diameter of 1.6mm, which is approximately 1/16 of an inch.

The count varies by length and exact density, but a 10lb tube of 1.6mm (1/16") stainless TIG rod typically contains approximately 250-300 rods.

No, TIG welding uses an inert gas (Argon) for shielding, so no flux is required on the rod itself.
