$4,063.00/25lb tubeThe Sil-Fos 5 Brazing Rod (Internal SKU: SF5-25) is a premium quality filler metal manufactured to meet the AWS A5.8 BCuP-3 classification. This alloy is composed of approximately 89% Copper, 5% Silver, and 6% Phosphorus. It is designed primarily for the brazing of copper and copper alloys, widely utilized in the manufacturing and repair of refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems, and electrical conductors.
Metallurgically, Sil-Fos 5 is distinct due to its wide melting range. With a solidus temperature of 1190°F (643°C) and a liquidus temperature of 1495°F (813°C), the alloy transitions slowly from solid to liquid. This characteristic provides a "sluggish" flow compared to BCuP-5 (15% silver), which is advantageous when filling loose connections or when a large fillet is desired. The 5% silver content imparts improved ductility over 0% silver (BCuP-2) rods, making the joints more resistant to vibration and thermal cycling fatigue common in compressor lines.
Usage Guidelines:
This rod is intended for use with oxy-acetylene or air-acetylene torches. While it is self-fluxing on copper, it should not be used on ferrous metals (steel, iron) or nickel alloys, as the phosphorus can form brittle intermetallic compounds that compromise joint integrity. When brazing brass or bronze, a flux is necessary. The 2.5mm diameter is versatile enough for both capillary action in tight fits and bead-building in wider gaps.
