OVERVIEW

Versatile 45% Silver Solder for Precision Repairs

Unlock superior brazing results with the Silvaloy 450 45% Silver Brazing Coil. Known in the trade as one of the most user-friendly silver solders available, this alloy is a staple for welders, HVAC technicians, and fabricators who need a reliable solution for joining dissimilar metals. Whether you are repairing a vintage brass instrument, fabricating custom ship components, or fixing an aircraft engine cooler, Silvaloy 450 delivers the high strength and ductility required for critical assemblies.

The magic of Silvaloy 450 lies in its chemistry. With a 45% silver content balanced by copper, zinc, and cadmium, it melts at a significantly lower temperature than cadmium-free alternatives. This means you can get in and out of the joint faster, reducing the risk of burning through thin-walled tubing or damaging sensitive components nearby. The alloy flows like water when it hits its liquidus temperature of 1145°F, penetrating deep into tight joints to create a seal that is often stronger than the base metal itself. It is an excellent choice for joining steel to copper, stainless steel to brass, and many other combinations.

This 5 oz pack features a 1/16" diameter wire coil, which is the perfect size for general purpose torch work. It is easy to manipulate and allows for precise deposition of filler metal, minimizing waste and cleanup time. Because this alloy is free-flowing, it works best with joint clearances between 0.001" and 0.005". Always use a high-quality flux, such as Handy Flux, to ensure proper wetting and adhesion. Note: This product contains cadmium; always read the safety data sheet and ensure proper ventilation when brazing.

Key Applications

  • Musical Instruments: Ideal for repairing brass and wind instruments due to excellent color match and flow.
  • Marine Construction: Used for salt-water piping and tubular assemblies requiring corrosion resistance.
  • HVAC & Refrigeration: Perfect for joining copper lines to brass valves or steel compressors.
  • General Fabrication: The go-to alloy for joining dissimilar metals in shop environments.

FAQ

Silvaloy 450 contains 45% silver, along with copper, zinc, and cadmium.

Yes, Silvaloy 450 (BAg-1) typically contains Cadmium to lower the melting point and improve flow. Proper ventilation and safety gear are required.

A general-purpose silver brazing flux, such as Handy Flux or Stay-Silv White Flux, is recommended for most applications.

It has a solidus of 1125°F (607°C) and a liquidus of 1145°F (618°C).

No, Silvaloy 450 is not suitable for aluminum or magnesium. It is designed for steel, stainless steel, copper, and brass.

The wire diameter is 1/16 inch (approximately 1.6mm).

A narrow melting range (20°F for this alloy) allows the filler metal to solidify quickly, which is helpful for faster cycle times and preventing segregation of the alloy elements.

Due to the presence of Cadmium, this specific alloy (BAg-1) should not be used for joints that come into direct contact with food or potable water. Cadmium-free alternatives should be selected for those uses.
