OVERVIEW

Industrial Grade 50/50 Tin-Lead Solder

For fabricators and maintenance professionals requiring a dependable soft solder, the Handy & Harman 50/50 Tin/Lead Solder Wire offers superior flow characteristics and joint integrity. This 1lb spool features a 3.2mm diameter solid wire, optimized for feeding into larger joints where significant filler metal is required. The 50/50 formulation (50% Sn, 50% Pb) is one of the most common general-purpose soft solders in the industry, valued for its wide melting range and ease of use in diverse environments.

Technical Performance

The defining feature of the 50/50 alloy is its melting behavior. It begins to melt at 361°F and becomes fully liquid at 421°F. The temperature range between these two points is known as the plastic range. During this phase, the solder is semi-solid, allowing the operator to smooth over the joint or build up a fillet, a technique often referred to as "wiping." This makes it particularly forgiving in applications where fit-up is not perfect or where the joint orientation makes controlling liquid flow difficult. It provides excellent thermal and electrical conductivity relative to its class and exhibits good corrosion resistance in standard atmospheric conditions.

Fabrication and Repair

This solder is the go-to choice for sheet metal fabrication, including galvanized steel gutters and roofing, where it provides a durable seal that withstands thermal expansion and contraction. It is also extensively used in the repair of copper and brass automotive radiators. The 3.2mm diameter allows for rapid deposition of material, speeding up workflow on long seams. Users must select an external flux appropriate for their base material—typically an acid flux for steels or a rosin flux for electrical connections (though 60/40 is often preferred for electronics, 50/50 can be used for larger gauge wire tinning).

Usage Recommendations

To achieve optimal results, ensure all base metal surfaces are mechanically cleaned and free of oxides, oil, or grease before heating. Apply flux liberally to the joint area. Heat the base metal, not the solder directly, allowing the heat of the workpiece to melt the wire. This ensures proper capillary action and adhesion. Due to the lead content, this product is strictly for non-potable water applications.

FAQ

50/50 solder has a melting range rather than a single point. It starts to melt (solidus) at approximately 361°F (183°C) and becomes fully liquid (liquidus) at 421°F (216°C).

You can use it for drainage and waste lines, but it is strictly prohibited for potable (drinking) water lines due to its lead content.

This is typically a solid wire spool. You will need to apply an appropriate external flux (paste or liquid) suitable for your base metal.

It is effective for joining copper, bronze, brass, mild steel, and galvanized iron. It is not suitable for aluminum or magnesium.

The wire diameter is 3.2mm, which is approximately 1/8 of an inch.

50/50 is generally more economical and has a wider plastic range, making it better for wiping joints or bridging wider gaps. 60/40 flows more easily and solidifies faster, which is often preferred for electronics.

It contains lead, which is toxic. Do not inhale fumes and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Never use on items that contact food or drinking water.

This is a 1lb (pound) spool.
