OVERVIEW

Armor Your Equipment with Hardalloy 118

When the job calls for serious armor against dirt, rock, and sand, reach for Hobart Hardalloy 118. This 1/4" stick electrode is a beast for laying down high-chromium carbide protection on parts that take a beating. If you are rebuilding crusher rolls or facing off dredge pumps, this rod gives you the abrasion resistance you need to keep equipment running longer. It hits a hardness of 55-60 HRC right out of the gate, making it one of the go-to choices for severe wear environments.

The Hardalloy 118 runs smooth on both AC and DCEP. If you're running a big buzz box or a generator in the field, this rod performs. The 1/4" diameter is perfect for filling up large areas fast, dumping plenty of metal with good bead contour. You'll notice the bead cross-checks (cracks) as it cools—don't sweat it. That's exactly what it's supposed to do. Those relief checks stop the hardfacing from popping off the base metal under stress. Just remember, this stuff is hard. You can't machine it; you have to grind it if you need to shape it.

Best practice? Limit your buildup to two or three layers to avoid spalling. If you need to build up more dimension, use a tough buffer layer first, then cap it with Hardalloy 118. It bonds well to carbon steel and austenitic manganese steel, making it a versatile tool in your hardfacing arsenal. Grab a 50lb carton and keep your heavy iron in the dirt where it belongs, not in the repair shop.

Welder's Notes

  • Polarity: Runs on AC or DC+.
  • Finish: Grind only. Do not attempt to machine.
  • Checking: Expect stress cracks; they are normal for this grade.
  • Layers: Stick to 2 layers max for best results.

FAQ

It is used for hardfacing parts subjected to severe abrasion and moderate impact, such as crusher rolls and dredge pumps.

No, the deposit is too hard (55-60 HRC) to be machined. It must be finished by grinding.

Yes, transverse stress-relief cracks (checking) are normal and desirable to prevent the overlay from spalling.

Hardalloy 118 operates on both AC and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP).

It is generally recommended to limit the application to 2-3 layers to maintain bond integrity.

The typical hardness is Rockwell C 55-60.

This specific product is 1/4 inch (6.4mm) in diameter.

If building up a very worn part, a tough buffer layer (like a buildup rod) is recommended before capping with Hardalloy 118.
