OVERVIEW

Expert Performance for High-Heat Applications

When your job involves welding heat-resistant stainless steels like AISI 330, you need a filler metal that matches the base material's toughness. The Exocor ER330 .035" MIG wire is your go-to solution for projects that will live in the fire. Whether you are repairing a heat-treat basket or fabricating furnace parts, this wire lays down a deposit that can handle temperatures up to 1800°F without scaling or failing. The 33lb spool size is perfect for shop use, keeping you welding longer without frequent changeovers.

Welding Tips for ER330: Unlike standard 308 or 316 stainless wires, ER330 is fully austenitic. This means the weld puddle doesn't have the small amount of ferrite that usually helps prevent cracking as the metal cools. To get the best results and avoid centerline cracking, you need to keep your heat input low. Move relatively fast and avoid wide weaving techniques. It is also critical to keep your bead shape convex (slightly rounded up); concave (flat or sunken) beads are much more likely to crack down the middle due to the high expansion coefficient of the high-nickel alloy.

This wire runs smoothly on DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive) and typically uses a shielding gas mix of Argon with a small percentage of Oxygen or CO2 to stabilize the arc and improve wetting. The 0.035" diameter gives you excellent control over the puddle, allowing for precise starts and stops which are crucial when managing crater cracks. With Exocor's consistent winding and high-quality surface finish, you'll experience fewer bird-nests and a stable arc, letting you focus on laying down the perfect bead in challenging high-temperature applications.

FAQ

ER330 is used for welding cast and wrought stainless steels of similar composition (AISI 330) typically found in high-temperature environments like furnaces and heat treatment facilities.

For MIG welding with ER330, a mixture of 98% Argon / 2% Oxygen or 97% Argon / 3% CO2 is commonly used to ensure arc stability and good bead wetting.

ER330 is a fully austenitic alloy with no ferrite. High heat input increases the risk of hot cracking (solidification cracking) during cooling.

It is not recommended. ER330 is significantly more expensive and designed for high-temperature resistance. Using it on 304 is unnecessary and may lead to cracking issues due to the fully austenitic weld metal.

This specific product is 0.035 inches (0.9 mm) in diameter.

Always aim for a convex (rounded) bead shape. Concave beads are highly susceptible to cracking with this alloy.

Like all stainless wires, it should be stored in a clean, dry environment to prevent contamination and moisture pickup, which can cause porosity.

Yes, the 0.035" diameter and MIG process allow for out-of-position welding, provided the short-circuit transfer mode or pulsed MIG is used.
