OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: ERNiCr-3 Nickel Alloy 82

This ERNiCr-3 Inconel 82 MIG welding wire is a solid wire electrode formulated for Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of nickel-chromium-iron alloys. With a diameter of 0.045" (1.14mm), it is well-suited for out-of-position welding in spray transfer or pulsed MIG modes, as well as high-deposition flat position welding. The alloy composition, nominally 72% Nickel, 20% Chromium, 3% Manganese, and 2.5% Niobium, provides exceptional resistance to oxidation and corrosion at elevated temperatures, retaining high strength even in cryogenic conditions.

Metallurgical Properties & Performance
The inclusion of Niobium acts as a potent stabilizer, reacting with carbon to prevent chromium carbide precipitation, thereby maintaining corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone. This chemistry also makes the wire highly resistant to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking and pitting. When used for cladding, Inconel 82 provides a robust barrier against corrosive media on standard carbon steel substrates. It is the preferred filler metal for welding ASTM B163, B166, B167, and B168 alloys.

Welding Parameters & Gas Selection
For optimal results, this wire should be used with Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP). Shielding gas selection is critical for nickel alloys; 100% Argon is the standard for clean, stable arcs, though Argon/Helium mixtures can be utilized to increase heat input and wetting action on thicker sections. The 30lb spool size fits standard industrial wire feeders, ensuring long run times between changeovers. Operators will appreciate the excellent wetting characteristics and the ease of controlling the weld puddle, which helps in achieving radiographic quality welds.

Common Applications:

  • Joining Inconel 600/601 to themselves or other alloys.
  • Welding carbon steel to stainless steel.
  • Surfacing/Cladding of steel.
  • Cryogenic piping and storage tanks.

FAQ

For MIG welding with ERNiCr-3 (Inconel 82), 100% Argon is the most common shielding gas. For thicker sections or to improve wetting, an Argon/Helium mixture can be used.

Yes, Inconel 82 is an excellent choice for joining dissimilar metals, such as carbon steel to stainless steel, because it accommodates the dilution from both base metals without cracking.

This wire meets the AWS A5.14 classification for ERNiCr-3.

This product comes on a 30lb (approx. 13.6kg) spool.

While standard steel liners can work, it is often recommended to use a Teflon or plastic liner for nickel alloys to prevent friction and contamination, similar to aluminum welding setups.

Inconel 82 (ERNiCr-3) is typically used for Inconel 600/601 and dissimilar joints. Inconel 625 (ERNiCrMo-3) contains Molybdenum and is used for higher corrosion resistance and strength, particularly in marine environments.

Yes, Inconel 82 exhibits excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance, making it suitable for furnace components and power generation applications.
