The SB035-30 is a 30lb spool of .035" (0.9mm) Silicon Bronze MIG wire, engineered for professional welding and brazing applications. This alloy, conforming to AWS A5.7 ERCuSi-A specifications, offers a unique combination of strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance. It is essentially a copper alloy containing approximately 3% silicon and roughly 1% manganese, which aids in deoxidation and fluidity during the weld pool transfer.

Applications and Metallurgy

Silicon Bronze is renowned for its versatility in the welding industry. It is the preferred filler metal for joining plain or galvanized steel sheet metal, copper, brass, and bronze. In the automotive industry, it is extensively used for MIG brazing of high-strength steels and body panels. The process relies on the capillary action of the bronze filler rather than melting the base metal, which significantly reduces the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and warping. This makes it ideal for aesthetic welds or situations where post-weld grinding must be minimized to maintain structural integrity.

Welding Parameters & Setup

For optimal results, this wire should be used with 100% Argon shielding gas. While Helium mixtures can be used to increase heat input on thicker sections, pure Argon provides a stable arc and clean bead profile for most .035" applications. Users should employ DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive) polarity. Due to the softer nature of copper-based wires compared to steel, we recommend using U-groove drive rolls and a low-friction liner (such as Teflon or Nylon) to prevent bird-nesting and ensure smooth wire feeding.
