OVERVIEW

Smooth Running, Machinable Hardfacing Rod

For welders tackling repair jobs on heavy equipment, the Josef H35 3.2mm Stick Electrode is the rod you reach for when a part needs to be built up and machined down. We all know the frustration of trying to repair a worn shaft or a chipped gear tooth, only to find the weld metal is too hard to turn on the lathe or too soft to hold up. The H35 hits the sweet spot. It lays down a deposit that is tough enough to take a beating from heavy impact loads but remains machinable so you can finish the part to the exact specs required. It flows wet and smooth, giving you a flat bead profile that minimizes the amount of grinding or machining needed to clean it up.

The arc characteristics of the Josef H35 are designed for operator comfort and control. It strikes easily and maintains a stable arc on both AC and DC+ polarity, which is a huge plus when you are working with older welding machines or out in the field. The slag system is formulated to cover the bead completely, protecting it as it cools, yet it chips off easily—often curling up on its own—saving you time on cleanup between passes. This is an all-position rod, meaning you can run it vertically up or overhead if you are repairing equipment that can't be dismantled and positioned flat.

Use this 3.2mm (1/8") rod for multi-pass build-up operations. It is excellent for rebuilding tractor idlers, rollers, crane wheels, and mine car wheels. If you are planning to put a super-hard abrasion-resistant layer on a part, lay down a couple of passes of H35 first. It acts as a shock absorber, preventing your hardfacing from cracking away from the base metal. Whether you are in the mine, on the farm, or in the fab shop, the Josef H35 is a reliable workhorse for bringing worn metal back to life.

FAQ

The deposit typically ranges between 30-35 HRC (approx. 300-350 Brinell), making it tough and impact-resistant but still machinable.

Yes, the Josef H35 deposit is designed to be machinable with standard carbide tooling, unlike harder abrasion-resistant rods.

For the 3.2mm (1/8") diameter, a current range of 90-140 Amps is recommended, depending on the base metal thickness and position.

Yes, the Josef H35 is an all-position electrode, suitable for flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding.

Preheat is generally recommended for high-carbon steels or thick sections to prevent cracking, typically around 150°C - 250°C.

Absolutely. It is an excellent choice for a buffer or cushion layer before applying harder, non-machinable hardfacing alloys.

It operates effectively on both AC (Alternating Current) and DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive).

It is primarily designed to resist impact and deformation (metal-to-metal wear), rather than severe abrasion.
