OVERVIEW

Technical Analysis: Tech-Rod 190 (ENiCu-7)

The Tech-Rod 190 is a nickel-copper coated electrode formulated to meet the AWS A5.11 specification, classified as ENiCu-7. This electrode is engineered for the welding of nickel-copper alloys, such as ASTM B127, B163, B164, and B165, commonly known by the trade name Monel 400. With a nominal composition of approximately 65% nickel and 30% copper, the deposited weld metal exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion by sea water, salts, and reducing acids, making it indispensable in marine and offshore engineering sectors.

Beyond joining nickel-copper alloys to themselves, the Tech-Rod 190 is metallurgically balanced for dissimilar welding applications. It effectively joins nickel-copper alloys to carbon steel, low alloy steel, and stainless steel. It is also suitable for joining copper-nickel alloys to nickel-copper alloys. The electrode is designed to operate on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), providing a stable arc that facilitates control in all welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead). The flux coating is formulated to produce a slag that detaches easily, reducing post-weld cleaning time and minimizing the risk of slag inclusions.

For overlay applications, the Tech-Rod 190 is a superior choice for cladding carbon steel. The resulting overlay provides a robust barrier against corrosion and erosion. When used for cladding, the weld deposit maintains its ductility and strength, ensuring the integrity of the surfaced component under operational stress. The chemical composition is tightly controlled, with limits on impurities like sulfur and phosphorus to prevent hot cracking, a common concern in nickel-alloy welding.

Each 10 lb can contains 1/8-inch x 14-inch electrodes that have been manufactured to strict quality standards. The Q2 Lot® program ensures that the specific chemistry and mechanical properties of the lot are documented and traceable. This level of transparency is critical for industries requiring code-compliant welding, such as pressure vessel fabrication and military defense projects. The hermetically sealed packaging further guarantees that the low-hydrogen coating remains dry, preventing porosity and ensuring X-ray quality welds.
