OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: C-32 Nickel-Iron TIG Filler Metal

The C-32 Cast Iron TIG Rod (1/16" x 36") is a premium Nickel-Iron filler metal specifically formulated for the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) of cast irons. This alloy typically exhibits a composition similar to ENiFe-CI classifications, offering a weld deposit that combines the high tensile strength of steel with the ductility of nickel. This unique chemistry is essential for accommodating the different expansion coefficients between the weld metal and the cast iron base, significantly reducing the susceptibility to centerline cracking and porosity in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).

Process & Application:
Designed for use with DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) polarity and 100% Argon shielding gas, the C-32 rod provides a clean, controllable weld pool. It is highly effective for joining dissimilar metals, such as welding cast iron to mild steel, stainless steel, or wrought iron. The 1/16" (1.6mm) diameter is particularly useful for fine detail work, thin-walled castings, or root passes where heat input must be strictly minimized to prevent thermal shock.

Machinability & Post-Weld Treatment:
Deposits made with C-32 are fully machinable, allowing for the restoration of threads and bearing surfaces. While pre-heating the base material (typically 300°F - 500°F) is recommended to slow the cooling rate and minimize stress, the C-32 alloy is forgiving enough for cold welding procedures when short beads and peening techniques are employed. Peening the weld bead while hot is highly advised to relieve contraction stresses and prevent cracking.

FAQ

You should use 100% Argon shielding gas for TIG welding with C-32 rods to ensure a clean, stable arc and prevent oxidation.

Yes, the Nickel-Iron composition of the C-32 rod produces a weld deposit that is fully machinable, allowing for drilling, tapping, and milling after welding.

While C-32 is designed to be more forgiving, preheating the cast iron to 300°F-500°F is highly recommended to reduce thermal shock and prevent cracking in the base metal.

Yes, the C-32 Nickel-Iron alloy is excellent for joining dissimilar metals, specifically cast iron to mild steel or stainless steel.

Use DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) for TIG welding with this rod.

These rods are 1/16 inch (1.6mm) in diameter.

Yes, peening the weld bead immediately after laying it (while still hot) is recommended to relieve residual stresses and prevent cracking.

It is suitable for grey, ductile (nodular), and malleable cast irons.
