OVERVIEW

The Go-To Rod for Titanium Fabrication

When your shop takes on a titanium job, you need a filler metal that is consistent, clean, and reliable. The Exocor ERTi-2 TIG Rod in 3/32" diameter is the industry standard for welding Grade 2 titanium, offering the perfect middle ground between strength and formability. Whether you are fabricating custom exhaust systems for motorsports, repairing marine hardware, or building industrial chemical tanks, this rod flows smoothly and wets out evenly, helping you achieve that coveted bright silver weld bead.

Titanium is unforgiving of contamination, and that starts with your filler metal. These rods come in a sealed 5 lb tube to ensure they arrive factory-clean. The 3/32" size is versatile enough to handle root passes on pipe or fill passes on thicker plate. Because ERTi-2 is Commercially Pure (CP), it is softer and more ductile than alloyed titanium (like Grade 5), making it much easier to feed and manipulate in the puddle. It is compatible with parent materials of Grades 1 through 4, simplifying your inventory if you work with various CP grades.

Tips for Success with ERTi-2

Welding titanium is all about shielding. Unlike steel, hot titanium will absorb oxygen and nitrogen from the air instantly, turning your weld brittle. Always use a gas lens on your torch for laminar flow, and ensure you have a trailing shield and proper back-purging setup. If your weld turns blue, purple, or white/powdery, you have contamination. With the Exocor ERTi-2, you are starting with a high-purity consumable; the rest is up to your prep and gas coverage. Keep your gloves clean, use acetone on your rod before welding, and keep the hot end of the filler wire inside the gas shield at all times to prevent tip oxidation.

  • Versatile: Welds most CP Titanium grades.
  • Clean: Factory-cleaned surface reduces porosity risk.
  • Ductile: Resists cracking better than higher-strength alloys.
  • Standard Size: 3/32" is perfect for general fit-up and gap bridging.

FAQ

ERTi-2 is Commercially Pure (CP) titanium, offering excellent corrosion resistance and ductility. ERTi-5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alloy containing aluminum and vanadium, offering much higher strength but lower ductility and is harder to weld.

You must use 100% Argon of the highest purity available (99.999% or Grade 4.8+). Helium-Argon mixes can be used for thicker sections, but never use CO2 or Oxygen mixes.

No. Titanium cannot be fusion welded to steel or stainless steel using standard arc welding processes as it forms brittle intermetallic compounds that will crack immediately.

AWS A5.16 is the specification for titanium and titanium-alloy welding electrodes and rods. It defines the chemical composition and mechanical property requirements to ensure the filler metal meets industry standards.

Titanium is highly sensitive to surface contamination. The tube protects the rods from dust, moisture, oils, and shop debris that could cause porosity or embrittlement in the weld.

While the rods are manufactured clean, it is best practice to wipe them down with acetone and a lint-free cloth immediately before welding to remove any residual oils or fingerprints.

Yes, absolutely. The backside of the weld must be shielded with inert gas (Argon) to prevent oxidation until the metal cools below approximately 800°F (427°C).

ERTi-2 is typically used to weld ASTM Grade 2 titanium, but it can also be used to weld Grades 1, 3, and 4. It is generally matched to the base metal or slightly undermatched in strength for better ductility.
