OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: ERNiCr-3 (Inconel 82) TIG Filler Metal

The Inconel 82 (AWS ERNiCr-3) TIG welding rod is a nickel-chromium-iron filler metal designed for gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) of nickel alloys, such as Inconel 600 and Incoloy 800, as well as for joining dissimilar metals. The .093" (2.4mm) diameter provides excellent control for root passes in pipe welding and fill passes in medium-thickness plate. This alloy is characterized by its high strength and exceptional resistance to oxidation and corrosion at elevated temperatures.

Metallurgical Properties and Applications

ERNiCr-3 is formulated to prevent carbon migration in the weld interface, making it the preferred choice for joining stainless steels to carbon steels or nickel alloys. It is highly resistant to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking and pure water stress-corrosion cracking, making it indispensable in the nuclear and power generation industries. The weld metal exhibits high mechanical properties from cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 900°F (480°C).

Common Base Materials:

  • ASTM B163, B166, B167, and B168 (Alloy 600)
  • ASTM B407, B408, B409 (Alloy 800)
  • Dissimilar joints involving carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel alloys
  • Surfacing/cladding of steel

Welding Parameters and Best Practices

To achieve optimal results with Inconel 82, cleanliness is paramount. Base materials should be cleaned of all oil, grease, and oxide skins prior to welding. Use 100% Argon or an Argon/Helium mixture as the shielding gas to ensure a stable arc and prevent atmospheric contamination. A gas lens is recommended to improve gas coverage.

  • Current: DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative)
  • Tungsten: 2% Thoriated, Lanthanated, or Ceriated
  • Technique: Maintain a short arc length to minimize heat input and prevent porosity. Avoid excessive weaving; stringer beads are generally preferred for nickel alloys to reduce the heat affected zone (HAZ).

This rod meets AWS A5.14 Class ERNiCr-3 and ASME SFA-5.14 standards. It provides a nominal composition of 72% Nickel, 20% Chromium, 3% Manganese, and 2.5% Niobium (plus Tantalum), which acts as a stabilizer to prevent cracking during solidification.

FAQ

This rod is classified as AWS A5.14 ERNiCr-3.

Yes, ERNiCr-3 (Inconel 82) is an excellent choice for dissimilar metal welding, such as joining stainless steel to carbon steel, due to its ability to accommodate dilution without cracking.

100% Argon is typically used. For thicker sections or to increase heat input, an Argon/Helium mixture can be used.

The rod diameter is 0.093 inches, which is nominally 3/32 inches (approx. 2.4mm).

These are typically sold in 10lb tubes. The exact rod count depends on the weight, but a 10lb tube of 3/32" rods contains a substantial quantity for professional use.

Yes, Inconel 82 maintains high strength and oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for furnace components and power generation applications.

We often stock various diameters including .045", 1/16", and 1/8". Please check our related products or contact sales for availability.

Inconel 82 (ERNiCr-3) is Ni-Cr-Fe based, while Inconel 625 (ERNiCrMo-3) contains Molybdenum. 625 offers higher strength and better corrosion resistance in very aggressive environments, but 82 is often preferred for specific dissimilar joints and high-temperature applications involving Alloy 600.
