OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: Hobart Hoballoy E7018-A1

The Hobart Hoballoy 7018-A1 (AWS E7018-A1) is a low-hydrogen, iron powder electrode designed for the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) of carbon-molybdenum steels. This 3/32" diameter electrode is supplied in a hermetically sealed 50lb can to maintain its low-hydrogen status right off the shelf. It is the consumable of choice for fabricating and repairing components made from 0.50% Molybdenum base metals, commonly found in high-temperature, high-pressure applications such as boilers, pressure vessels, and piping systems.

Technically, the E7018-A1 classification indicates a tensile strength of at least 70,000 psi and a chemical composition that includes approximately 0.40-0.65% Molybdenum. This alloying element increases the creep resistance and high-temperature strength of the weld metal. The "18" suffix denotes a low-hydrogen iron powder coating, which facilitates a higher deposition rate compared to non-iron powder electrodes and provides a smooth, stable arc with low spatter. The coating is specifically engineered to resist moisture absorption (H4R designation equivalent performance), which is critical for preventing delayed cracking (hydrogen-induced cracking) in the heat-affected zone.

Welders will appreciate the operability of the Hoballoy 7018-A1. It offers excellent puddle control and slag detachability, which minimizes post-weld cleanup time. The electrode is capable of producing X-ray quality welds in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead). It is compatible with both AC and DCEP currents, although DCEP is often preferred for its smoother arc characteristics and deeper penetration control. Proper storage and handling are recommended; once opened, electrodes should be stored in a rod oven to maintain their low-hydrogen properties.

FAQ

E7018-A1 electrodes are primarily used for welding carbon-molybdenum steels (approx. 0.50% Mo), which are common in high-temperature applications like boilers and pressure piping.

Yes, as a low-hydrogen electrode, it should be stored in a holding oven after opening the hermetically sealed can to prevent moisture absorption.

Yes, this electrode is designed to operate on both AC (Alternating Current) and DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive).

These electrodes have a diameter of 3/32 inches.

Moisture in the coating can introduce hydrogen into the weld pool, leading to hydrogen-induced cracking (cold cracking) and porosity, especially in alloy steels.

This product comes in a 50lb can.

Yes, the 7018-A1 is an all-position electrode, suitable for flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding.

It is widely used in power generation, petrochemical, and construction industries for boiler and piping maintenance.
