OVERVIEW

High-Performance E71T-11 Self-Shielded MIG Wire

Maximize your welding efficiency with our .035" E71T-11 Gasless Flux Core Wire. This consumable is manufactured to meet strict AWS A5.20 standards, providing a tensile strength of at least 70,000 psi. It is specifically designed for the Flux Cored Arc Welding-Self Shielded (FCAW-S) process, utilizing a specialized internal flux composition that protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination. This makes it the go-to solution for structural steel erection, bridge fabrication, and heavy equipment repair where dragging gas cylinders is impractical.

The wire operates on DC Electrode Negative (DCEN) polarity, also known as straight polarity. This setup directs the heat into the wire rather than the base metal, increasing the deposition rate and ensuring a smooth, stable arc. The .035" diameter offers a perfect balance between deposition rate and control, allowing for welding on thin gauge sheet metal as well as thicker plates up to 1/2 inch with proper technique and multi-pass layering. It offers excellent wetting action, ensuring good fusion at the toes of the weld and reducing the risk of cold lap.

Unlike E71T-GS, which is strictly for single-pass applications, E71T-11 is capable of multi-pass welding (within specific thickness limitations), offering greater structural integrity for more demanding projects. It performs admirably on galvanized steel, burning through the zinc coating while minimizing porosity. The fast-freezing slag system supports out-of-position welding, giving the operator excellent puddle control in vertical-up and overhead scenarios.

Technical Specifications & Usage

For optimal results, ensure your machine is set to DCEN. A knurled drive roll is recommended to feed the tubular wire without crushing it, ensuring consistent wire feed speeds and preventing bird-nesting. Stick-out (contact tip to work distance) should generally be maintained between 3/8" and 1/2" to preheat the wire properly and activate the flux.

FAQ

No, this is a self-shielded flux core wire (E71T-11). The flux inside the wire creates its own protective gas shield as it burns, so no external gas tank is required.

You must use DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as straight polarity. This means the ground clamp goes to Positive (+) and the gun goes to Negative (-).

No, this wire is designed specifically for mild carbon steel. It is not suitable for stainless steel or aluminum welding.

Yes, E71T-11 is excellent for outdoor use because the shielding is generated at the arc and is not easily blown away by wind, unlike gas-shielded MIG welding.

It is highly recommended to use knurled drive rolls (often marked with a 'K' or having teeth). Smooth rolls can slip or crush the hollow flux-cored wire, causing feeding issues.

Yes, E71T-11 has deoxidizers that allow it to weld over light to moderate rust, mill scale, and dirt better than solid MIG wire.

E71T-11 is generally rated for multi-pass welding on carbon steel, unlike E71T-GS which is strictly single-pass. However, always check specific thickness limitations for critical structural work.

This wire has a diameter of 0.035 inches, which is a very common size for general fabrication and repairs on material thicknesses ranging from 16 gauge up to 1/4 inch or more.
