
The Hobart Fabco 85 is a gas-shielded flux-cored (FCAW-G) wire formulated with a basic slag system, distinct from the more common rutile (T-1) wires found in general fabrication. This 3/32" diameter wire is engineered for applications demanding high impact toughness and superior resistance to cracking. The basic slag chemistry acts as a powerful deoxidizer and desulfurizer, resulting in a cleaner weld metal with very low diffusible hydrogen levels. This makes the Fabco 85 an excellent choice for welding steels that are susceptible to cold cracking or for applications involving high restraint and heavy cross-sections.
While basic slag wires typically require more operator skill regarding gun angle and travel speed compared to rutile wires, the Fabco 85 offers a balanced arc that is manageable in the flat and horizontal positions. The wire is designed for DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive) polarity and supports both single and multi-pass welding procedures. The slag cover, while not as fast-freezing as rutile types, provides adequate coverage to protect the molten pool during solidification and is generally easy to remove, revealing a sound bead profile.
This wire provides flexibility in shielding gas options. It can be run with 100% CO2, which promotes deep penetration and ensures proper fusion in thicker base metals. Alternatively, a mixture of 75% Argon / 25% CO2 can be used to improve arc stability and reduce spatter levels, which is beneficial when welding out of position or when finish appearance is a secondary concern to metallurgical quality. Primary applications include the fabrication of heavy earthmoving equipment, structural steel erection, and mining machinery repair where dynamic loading and low-temperature impact properties are critical specifications. The 60 lb coil packaging ensures extended arc-on time for automated or semi-automated setups requiring 3/32" wire feeding systems.
