OVERVIEW

Master Dirty Steel with Hobart FabCOR 86R

Stop wasting valuable time grinding away every inch of mill scale before you strike an arc. The Hobart FabCOR 86R .052" Metal-Cored Welding Wire is built to handle the reality of industrial welding. Unlike standard solid wires that require pristine surface preparation, the FabCOR 86R features a special chemical formulation loaded with deoxidizers. This allows it to burn through light-to-moderate rust, mill scale, and oil, pulling impurities to the surface in small silicon islands rather than trapping them as porosity in your weld. The result is a sound, X-ray quality weld with minimal prep work.

This 44lb spool is designed for serious fabricators who need to keep the arc on. Metal-cored wires like the FabCOR 86R offer a significant productivity boost over solid MIG wire. Because the current travels through the outer metal sheath, you get a higher current density that melts the wire faster. This means you can weld with faster travel speeds and lay down more metal per hour. It’s the perfect solution for long, continuous welds found in railcar manufacturing, barge building, and structural steel fabrication.

Smooth Operation and Great Bead Appearance

Welders love the FabCOR 86R for its smooth runability. When paired with a 75/25 or 90/10 Argon/CO2 gas mix, this wire operates in a spray transfer mode that feels soft and consistent. You will experience very little spatter, which means you won't be spending your afternoon chipping BBs off your workpiece. The weld bead wets out beautifully, creating a flat, professional-looking profile that blends smoothly into the base metal. Unlike flux-cored wires, there is no heavy slag layer to chip off—just small islands of silica that often pop off on their own or brush away easily.

The .052" diameter is a sweet spot for heavy plate welding, offering deep penetration and high fill rates without being unmanageable. Whether you are welding fillets on heavy machinery or butt joints on storage tanks, Hobart FabCOR 86R gives you the speed of a cored wire with the cleanliness of a solid wire. Upgrade your welding process today and see the difference a high-performance metal-core wire can make in your shop's efficiency.

FAQ

Hobart FabCOR 86R is designed for use with Argon/CO2 mixtures. The recommended range is 75% to 95% Argon with the balance being CO2. A 75/25 or 90/10 mix is commonly used to achieve a stable spray transfer.

No, this is a Metal-Cored wire. While it is tubular like flux-cored wire, it is filled with metallic powders rather than flux. It produces very little slag (mostly silica islands) and requires shielding gas.

The 'R' indicates a formulation with higher levels of deoxidizers (Silicon and Manganese). This gives the wire superior tolerance to mill scale, rust, and other surface contaminants compared to standard metal-cored wires.

FabCOR 86R runs on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), also known as DC+ or Reverse Polarity.

This wire is primarily designed for Flat and Horizontal positions due to the fluid nature of the metal-core puddle. Out-of-position welding (vertical/overhead) is generally difficult without pulsed waveforms.

Because metal-cored wire is tubular and can be crushed, it is best to use V-Knurled or U-Groove drive rolls. Avoid using standard V-Groove rolls with excessive tension, as this can deform the wire.

It does not produce a full slag covering like flux-cored or stick electrodes. It produces small 'silica islands' on the surface of the weld bead which are easily removed.

It is classified as E70C-6M H4 per AWS A5.18 standards.
