OVERVIEW

Get Stronger Welds with R60 Oxy-Acetylene Rods

When you are out in the field or in the shop firing up the torch, you want a rod that flows smoothly and leaves a bead you can be proud of. The RG60-332 R60 Gas Welding Rod is your go-to filler for carbon steel projects that demand more strength than a standard coat-hanger or R45 rod can provide. These 3/32" (2.5mm) rods are built for the oxy-acetylene process, giving you that classic puddle control that makes gas welding such an art form. Whether you are repairing an exhaust pipe, fixing a garden gate, or working on vintage auto body panels, the R60 gives you the fluidity and wetting action you need to lay down a flat, smooth bead without fighting the puddle.

One of the biggest headaches in repair work is dealing with steel that isn't brand new. Rust, mill scale, and oil can cause popping and porosity in your welds. The R60 formula includes special deoxidizers (manganese and silicon) that help clean up the weld puddle as you go. This means you get fewer pinholes and a stronger bond, even if the prep work isn't laboratory-perfect. The 60,000 psi tensile strength ensures that your repair holds up under stress, making it a reliable choice for structural fixes and pressurized piping.

We know that rod storage is a pain, which is why these come in a tough 10lb tube that keeps moisture and dirt out. The rods themselves are copper-coated, so they won't turn into a rusty mess if they sit on the shelf for a few months between jobs. The 36-inch length gives you plenty of reach, keeping your hands away from the heat while you feed the puddle. If you are looking to upgrade your gas welding game and want a rod that is forgiving yet strong, the RG60-332 is the solid choice for your torch cart.

FAQ

The primary difference is tensile strength and chemistry. R45 has a minimum tensile strength of 45,000 psi and is a general-purpose rod. R60 has a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi and contains more manganese and silicon, which act as deoxidizers to produce sounder welds, especially on slightly dirty or higher-carbon steels.

While R60 is a steel rod and can technically be melted with a TIG torch, it is specifically formulated for the oxy-fuel gas welding process. For TIG welding mild steel, an ER70S-2 or ER70S-6 rod is highly recommended as they have a chemistry optimized for the TIG arc environment.

Generally, no. When gas welding mild steel with R60 rods, the puddle is usually controlled by the flame chemistry (neutral flame) and the rod's internal deoxidizers. Flux is typically not required for mild steel, unlike brazing or welding cast iron.

These rods are 2.5mm in diameter, which is the metric equivalent of 3/32 inch. This is a versatile size suitable for welding material thicknesses ranging from 1/16" to 1/4".

The copper coating serves primarily to protect the steel rod from rusting (oxidation) during storage. It also helps the rod slide smoothly if it were used in automatic feeding, though for cut-length gas rods, the corrosion protection is the main benefit.

This rod is designed for Oxy-Fuel welding, so you should use Oxygen and a fuel gas, typically Acetylene. It is not designed for MIG welding with shielding gases like Argon or CO2.

The exact count varies slightly by manufacturing tolerance, but for 3/32" (2.5mm) steel rods, there are approximately 150 to 160 rods in a 10lb package.
