OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: ER70S-6 Carbon Steel TIG Filler Metal

The ER70S-6 is the industry-standard choice for high-quality TIG welding on mild and carbon steels. This 3.2mm (1/8") diameter rod is formulated with increased levels of manganese (Mn) and silicon (Si), which serve as critical deoxidizers in the weld puddle. When welding carbon steel, oxygen from the atmosphere or surface contaminants can cause porosity and weak bonds. The scavengers in ER70S-6 react with these impurities to form a fluid slag that floats to the surface, leaving behind a clean, sound weld deposit. This makes ER70S-6 significantly more forgiving than ER70S-2 or ER70S-3 when welding on base metals that haven't been cleaned to white metal.

Weldability and Performance
Welders will appreciate the excellent wetting action of this rod. The puddle is fluid and responsive, allowing for easy manipulation and

FAQ

ER70S-6 contains higher levels of silicon and manganese, which act as deoxidizers. This makes it better suited for welding steel with some rust or mill scale, whereas ER70S-2 is triple-deoxidized and often preferred for extremely clean, critical pipe welds or killed steels.

For TIG (GTAW) welding of mild steel with ER70S-6, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas. It provides a stable arc and protects the molten puddle from atmospheric contamination.

Yes, these rods feature a thin copper coating. This coating prevents the steel rod from rusting during storage and improves electrical conductivity at the contact point if used in automatic feeding systems, though for manual TIG it primarily serves as corrosion protection.

While amperage depends on the base metal thickness and joint design, a 3.2mm (1/8") rod is typically used in the range of 100 to 200 amps DCEN.

While it is possible, ER70S-6 is designed for TIG welding. For Oxy-Acetylene gas welding, a rod specifically designed for that process (like R45 or R60) is generally recommended to control the puddle better without the electric arc.

A 10lb tube of 3.2mm (1/8") steel TIG rods typically contains approximately 70 to 80 rods, depending on the exact length and density tolerances.

Use DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as Straight Polarity, for TIG welding mild steel with this rod.
